A Foodie's Guide to the Ultimate Anaheim Packing District Experience

A few places have come and gone since our first visit, but it is always busy, and remains one of my favorite places to dine at because of its history and variety. When you can’t take one more second of the mind-numbing chaos of Downtown Disney, round up the crew and head to the Anaheim Packing House. Located just ten minutes down the road from the parks, this former citrus packing center built in 1919 has been transformed into a two-story food hall and entertainment complex. These days, it’s a one-stop shop for local dates, bored high schoolers, and vacationing families who couldn’t agree on where to eat in Downtown Disney. The 50-plus vendors mean everyone in your group will find something they like. We particularly love the Thai food at White Elephant, and when it's time for a cocktail, you'll find us at The Blind Rabbit, a moody speakeasy in the basement.

Directions from Disneyland / Convention Center:

Little Saigon covers roughly three square miles, mostly in the city of Westminster, but also spills over into Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and Fountain Valley. Baseball, hockey, and now football fans cheer for their teams throughout the year, and their home stadiums and arenas score points with their special features and offerings. The Packing District complex goes beyond building makeovers with Farmers Park, an inviting two-acre space with room to stroll and relax. Take an outdoor yoga class, play ping-pong, watch a movie on an outdoor screen, or dine al fresco on modern Chinese at 18 Folds or the vegetarian- and vegan-friendly shovel-to-fork eatery Cultivation Kitchen. Walkable, livable, sociable areas have sprouted around the town in recent years, making the city a worthy magnet for both locals and visitors.

How do I get to the Anaheim Packing District?

For now there are earthy rabbit meatballs ($15) with basil tomato sauce, queso fresco and ciabatta. Another showstopping appetizer, billed as mac and cheese ($13), is so much more than the name implies. Duck confit gets tossed into cavatappi coated in a parmesan-bechamel sauce with truffle essence. For lighter appetites there’s roasted spaghetti squash ($17) with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and spinach melded together with olive oil. Maybe you need an end-of-day break after 10 hours of meetings in the Anaheim Convention Center.

Due to health code, pets are not permitted within the interior / exterior of the Anaheim Packing District.

Buy a bottle and it transferred into an unbreakable carafe--with two plastic glasses--so you can enjoy it at the game. To get the local vibe, hang out by the Trout Farm (Section 101), the designated cheering section for star center fielder Mike Trout. Pork chops, Catfish, Hot Links, Po'Boys – any chance to indulge in some soul food in Southern California is welcomed treat.

Chicken shwarma ($12) is on the lighter side with loads of lettuce, tomato and pickles that aren’t  too tangy or salty. The sandwich is wrapped tightly in foil so it stays warm and it’s served with garlic sauce. Vietnamese meets Creole cuisine at 206 BCE Noodles, where you can enjoy traditional items such as pho, or venture out and try something new. The trendy eatery is best known for its Instagram-worthy antigravity noodles, which taste as good as they look. Welcome to the Anaheim Packing District, home to the historic Anaheim Packing House, MAKE Bldg, Farmers Park, and Packard Building ! There are several ways to enjoy the culinary artistry from our small businesses, including takeout, delivery, indoor dining and outdoor dining.

As a fan of repurposed breakfast options, I was a big fan of the “Cereal Killer,” a pie that has a cereal crust, and a filling made with a cream cheese base packed with Fruity Pebbles and then topped with Froot Loops. They also have more traditional items as well, like an Apple Crumble Pie, Pumpkin, Pecan, Blueberry, Cherry, etc. all with their own unique twists. Kids love the chance to see what it’s like to be on a real archeological dig. Most rides at the Anaheim theme park are geared to the 4-foot/120-cm-and-under set, so younger children will definitely feel like this is a place for them. Start with straight-up jumping and graduate to volleyball, dodgeball, and basketball on the trampoline courts at Sky Zone Trampoline Park. Slam-dunking is a breeze (bouncy launch pads!) at this mega-size indoor trampoline park.

Offering all of the traditional accoutrements like collard greens, candied yams, baked beans, and sweet potato pie, Georgia's nails southern flavors with only one slight variation. Injecting a bit of Brazilian cuisine into the menu, garlic rice and savory Pastels are available as well. These pastries are fried pockets of seasoned beef or chicken and they are a can't miss. As it happens, though, there’s much more to the Packing District than food.

The Anaheim Packing House – What You’ll Find

There are parking lots and parking structures all over the Anaheim Packing District, and they’re free, but they’re also at a premium during the busy hours. Be prepared to do a little space hunting or take advantage of the valet parking to save yourself some aggravation. Sweeten your visit to the Anaheim Packing House with a hand-dipped gelato pop. It’s a DIY dessert when you select your gelato flavor, dipping and toppings, too. There’s no wrong way to personalize your pop, but if you’re looking for inspiration try the Chocolate Covered Pistachio combo.

The equivalent to Chili Cheese fries, this version offers gravy, short rib, onions, mushroom, and cheese curds atop golden fried potatoes. Boasting an impressive menu of sandwiches that range from traditional to seasonal specialties, whatever the preference, it's tasty and always wrapped in butcher paper. With so many options at Black Sheep Grilled Cheese Bar, it’s never been so much fun or so delicious to build your own grilled cheese sandwich. Customize your queso or try one of their creations like the sandwich made with goat cheese, caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes and arugula pesto.

Whatever floats your boat, you’ll have a blast at this 53,000-square-foot restaurant/stage/dance hall. While high-quality beef gets a big play here, Executive Chef Michael Rossi’s farm-to-fork menu goes far beyond meat and potatoes. Burn off enough calories for dessert with a spin on the 1,222-square-foot dance floor, with live bands playing country music until the wee hours. Stores and eateries are a nice mix of quality chains and local finds, and movie theaters, live music venues, and even a bowling alley provide plenty of ways to relax. As you explore, you’ll notice that art is everywhere—as installations, murals, and in the shop windows.

Stop by Lemon Drop for a pressed juice or lemonade and then plan your dining strategy. Maybe you’re in the mood for soul food at Georgia’s, ramen noodles at Orange Tei or the street foods of India at Adya, one of The OC’s top new eateries. Finish the night with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in a restored 1920s' rail freight wagon—yes, inside the Packing House—at The BXCR (also known as the Underground Wine Society). Today, this is the only packing house left in Anaheim, and it’s kind of a miracle it’s still here. The last crate of citrus was packed in 1955 and the building sat vacant for a few years before Electra Motors took it over, removing the packing equipment, among other changes.

Well right to the Sunkist Packing House located in the heart of Anaheim. Plenty cute with a tiny hanging Moroccan lamp and a collection of ibriks on a shelf, this boite is billed as Syrian. Its founders came here in 2012 as refugees, but most of the dishes will be familiar to fans of middle eastern fare. Spring for the steak kabobs ($14) which are tender and flavorful even when cooked medium. The spicy hummus ($5) is luxuriously creamy with just a bit of a kick from red peppers.

This food hall is housed in the restored Packard Building, a former citrus packing house. The Packing House features over 20 artisan eateries and shops, each with their own unique flavor and style. The top floor of the Packing House has a much larger selection of smaller restaurants. This floor definitely has a more communal feel, while the bottom floor is great for a more intimate experience. This section of the Packing House has everything you could possibly be craving. The top floor features restaurants like The Chippy, a trendy, sailing inspired fish restaurant and grill, and Han’s, a homemade ice cream bar.

You’re allowed  two sides, so grab some crisp large shred coleslaw, along with red beans and rice to sop up the sauce. If you love sandwiches, pick up the Spicy Andouille Po Boy ($8.95). It’s fully “dressed” with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, dill pickles, Dijon mustard and garlic mayo which all soaks into a warm French roll. Originally built as a Sunkist Citrus packing house back in 1919, the facility was once used to wash, grade, and pack citrus before it was sent around the country.

The Packing District complex goes beyond building makeovers with Farmers Park, an inviting two-acre space with room to wander and relax. Take an outdoor yoga class, play table tennis, watch a film on an outdoor screen, or, on Sundays, visit the local growers at the Farmers Park Market—don’t miss Orange Clementine Bakery’s citrus-infused cake. In a sea of eateries all designed to one up another, the Lemon Drop is the kiosk of refreshment in this mall of food.
